Six students win Huntington full scholarships

FORT WAYNE-Officials from Primetime Community Center, A Ministry of Youth For Christ, recently joined Huntington University in announcing the names of the 2008 Horizon Leadership Program scholarship recipients. Each student has been awarded a five-year, full scholarship to Huntington University as part of the school's Horizon program partnership with Youth For Christ. The scholarship funds are a combination of state, federal and institutional aid that covers tuition, fees and room and board.
The program is designed to help create a more ethincally and culturally diverse campus.
According to Luther Whitfield, director of the Primetime Center and senior pastor at New Covenant Worship Center, the students were chosen for their capacity for leadership and civic commitment and academic achievement.
Students in the program are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA and volunteer at the Primetime Center while in the program.
The scholarship winners are:
- Teirenney Fincher, a senior at Elmhurst High School. A proposed social work major, Fincher is a member of YFC Campus Life, captain of the girl's basketball team and secretary of the JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) internship program.
- Juan Lopes, a 2006 graduate of South Side High School. A proposed graphic design major, Lopez is a YFC student leader in the organization's Hispanic Ministries, Primetime volunteer, soccer team member and member of the Foreign Language Club at school. He works in visual arts and ceramics.
- Shar'niese Miller, a senior at South Side High School. A proposed psychology major, Miller has been a YFC student leader since middle school, serves on the school's student council, is a Key Club member and as president of the Friends of Dorothy group.
- Evianna Monroe, a senior at Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music in Bronx, N.Y. A proposed English and history major, Monroe is a member of YFC Campus Life, a youth dance instructor, first chair cellist in the high school orchestra and a section leader in a major orchestra and member of the Walton Step Team.
- Logan Placencia, a senior at Lakewood Park Christian School in Auburn. A proposed elementary education major, Placencia is a YFC JV Club leader, National Honor Society student, teaches Spanish to first grade students and is vice chair of community relations for the March of Dimes Chain Reaction.
- Ebony Robinson, a senior at Elmhurst High School. A proposed applied exercise major, Robinson is a YFC Campus Life member, president of the school's JAG program and a member of the girls basketball team. She also coached children's sports in a program at Taylor University.
In addition, the Horizon Leadership Program students will be exposed to leadership activities within YFC at various sites in the Midwest. At the end of the fall and spring semesters, they will participate in leadership cohort retreats. The group will receive professional leadership training from the Huntington University's Enterprise Resource Center and the Career Development Office and have the option of becoming involved with the Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service at Huntington University.
