Suspect in AutoZone shooting killed in gunbattle with police

FORT WAYNE—At approximately 9:38 p.m., March 20, officers with the Fort Wayne Police and Indiana State Police Departments responded to the AutoZone store located in the 300 block of East Rudisill in reference to an individual armed with a gun firing shots at this location.

As officers arrived on the scene, they located an individual armed with a handgun outside the business.  The suspect began fleeing on foot in a southwest direction while still armed. As officers pursued him, he began firing shots at the officers, at which time the officers returned gunfire.

The suspect, later identified as 62-year-old Abraham Martinez, was struck by officers’ gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A male who was inside of the Auto Zone at the time was struck by the suspect’s initial gunfire and hwas transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

This incident remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police, Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
