FORT WAYNE—Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne will be providing free, nutritious meals to children under 18 years of age this summer at ten approved sites, as an Indiana Department of Education sponsor for the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP).  A kick-off celebration open to the public was held at the Fairfield Boys & Girls Club that‘s located at 2609 Fairfield Ave., on Monday, June 6, 2016 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.  In addition to free meals for children 18 years of age or younger, the Fort Wayne Fire Department and Fort Wayne Police Department displayed their vehicles and spoke with interested children and parents about public safety. Games and activities were available for children during the hour.

The hour-long public celebration continued for Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne members during Public Safety & Nutrition Awareness Week June 6 to June 10, 2016.  During that week, Club members learned more about public safety from the Fort Wayne Police and Fort Wayne Fire Department and participate in discussions about nutrition and healthy habits.

SFSP was created to serve nutritious meals to children when National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program meals are not available. To ensure all children receive proper nutrition throughout the year, the Indiana Department of Education reimburses qualified organizations that prepare and serve meals to eligible children for SFSP during the summer and school vacation periods.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne expects to prepare more than 850 meals each day this summer to reach the families needing food services the most. The distribution sites will be located primarily in low income areas and government subsidized housing and Fort Wayne Housing Authority HUD apartments.  Free lunch for children 18 years or under will be available through Aug. 12, 2016, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at the following sites:
