On Dec. 29, 2013, six community leaders were honored at New Zion Tabernacle Church. Senior Pastor, Crystal Bush acknowledged these unsung heroes who make a difference in Northeast Indiana and beyond. Past awards have been bestowed upon Mr. Glynn Hines and Mr. John Peirce. The accolade is given for demonstrating excellence and inspiring others to serve at their best.  Each person’s passion for service and the Fort Wayne Community makes a positive impact on every life they touch. Pastor Bush stated that “We are a better community because of all of you.” Awardees: Cheri Becker, executive director of Leadership Fort Wayne; Bennie Edwards, president of the MLK Jr. Club; Garry Hamilton, Fort Wayne police chief; Deborah McMahan, MD, FW/AC health commissioner; Dr. Shirley Phifer-Smith, associate pastor, New Zion Tabernacle and the Rev. Roger Reece, executive pastor of Associated Churches, Inc. A morning reception was held at the church and a portion of the service focused on this diverse group of influential citizens.
