Halloween Byrd

Halloween Byrd departed this earthly life on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, surrounded by her loving and devoted family at the age of 77. She was the second oldest child born to Arthur and Elizabeth Balfour on Aug. 27, 1936, in Chulahoma, just outside of Holly Springs, Miss. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Chulahoma Baptist Church. In 1955, she relocated to Fort Wayne at the invitation of her cousin, Mattie Louise. She was previously employed by the Van Arman Hotel. On April 20, 1957, she was united in holy matrimony to Ananias Byrd at the home of Mattie and Joe Shade Sr. She devoted herself to her family, managing the home while nurturing and raising their girls. Halloween united with Pilgrim Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend John Dixie. She later joined her daughters at St. John Missionary Baptist Church where the late Reverend James W. Bledsoe was the pastor and continued her membership under the leadership of Reverend F.A. Sleet. During her membership at St. John, she was a member of the Missionary Society and attended Sunday School faithfully until her health began to fail. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Curtis Byrd; sisters, Eloise Alexander and Lillie Mae Harden; brother, Arthur Balfour Jr.; brothers-in-law, Frederick Tatum, Lelius Alexander and Jerry Byrd. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Ananias Byrd; daughters, Irene (Raymond) Brooks, Norma Byrd and Glinda Byrd; granddaughters, Reia Brooks and Amnesty Byrd; sisters, Mattie (Melvin) Kemp and Hattie Tatum; sister-in-law, Catherine Byrd; nieces, Patricia McToy, Mildred Alexander, Brenda Kemp, Debora Jackson, Brenda Noel and Betina Byrd; nephews, Dennis Alexander, Rodney Kemp, Keith Kemp and Donald Byrd; three extra special cousins, Mattie Louise Shade, Mattie B. Irby and Elizabeth Essex; special god-granddaughter, Ariceli Ochoa along with a host of other special cousins, relatives and friends. Service was eb. 27, 2014, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 2421 S. Hanna St., with burial in Covington Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by Ellis Funeral Home. Katie Dean Johnson, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014 at Parkview Regional Medical Center. She is survived by her siblings, Donnell, Roy (Jacqueline), Terry, Cornell and Patricia Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Service was Monday, Feb. 24, 2014 at Ellis Funeral Home, 1021 E. Lewis St. Arrangements were by Ellis Funeral Home.

James Rodney Lattimore

James Rodney Lattimore

James Rodney Lattimore, 74, of Fort Wayne, departed this life on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014. He was born on May 5, 1939, in Richmond, Ind. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Lattimore; daughters, Pamela and Rhonda Lattimore; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. Lattimore and Blanch Clancy. Funeral service was Saturday, Feb. 29 at Zion Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by Carmichael Funeral Service.

Meta Mae Marsh

Meta Mae Marsh was 62 when she passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Parkview Hospital-Randallia. She was a native of Osceola, Ark. At an early age she was baptized at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Osceola. In 1969, she moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana and later in life worked as a Certified Nurses Assistant (CNA). Meta leaves many fond memories to be cherished by her children, Alvin Marsh Jr. and Toya L. Marsh; mother, Erma L. Love; sisters, Willie Mae (Harold) Davis and Joyce (Henry) Caldwell, Lucille Richardson, Carolyn Bailey, Marilyn Bailey, Patricia Haley, Bertha Craig, Seleana Love, Barbara Ann Love and Diane Love; brothers, Ulysee Bailey, Bobby Little, David Love and Gary Love; along with a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Marsh Sr.; her father, Royal Lee Love and siblings, Leroy Love, Julia Hill and Parnell Love. She will be remembered for her love of listening to music, rummage sales, dining out, cooking and spending quality time with her family. Service wass noon Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at Come As You Are Community Church, 7910 S. Anthony Blvd. Arrangements were by Ellis Funeral Home.
