Lawrence Underwood was born on May 28, 1960 to the proud parents of Emma (Dixie) and David Underwood in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He accepted Jesus as his personal Savior at an early age and joined Turner Chapel A.M.E. Church. In 1979 he graduated from R. Nelson Snider High School. He served three years in the United States Military Forces—Marines Branch. Lawrence worked 24 years at the Fort Wayne Hilton until his health began to fail. Also, he was employed at the Summit Club and Midtowne Place. Just over four years ago, Lawrence received an awesome gift from God. He really thought life just couldn’t get any better than what it was. But in 2009, a bouncy baby girl was born. She became to be known as his “Princess” and his “Baby.” Ollysea made a difference in Lawrence’s life! She brought him so much love, laughter and joy. Lawrence just wanted to get better to take care of her. Nevertheless, he made every day…every moment count. He counted this blessing as all joy. So, there’s no mistake, Lawrence loved being a “Daddy”! Lawrence departed this world at the young age of 53 on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Canterbury Green Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma Moore and David Underwood. He leaves to cherish his memories: one daughter, Ollysea Kreier; siblings, Sonya Underwood, Janet Moore, Frederick Underwood, and David Underwood, all of Fort Wayne; half-brothers, Darrin and Travis Underwood, both of Atlanta; aunts, Ruth A. Good, Esther B. Saunders and Johnny M. Goldsby; uncle, the Rev. Roosevelt Dixie Sr. and a host of other relatives and friends. Lawrence was well known and “loved” by so many wherever he went. He will be tremendously missed! Lawrence will be forever in our hearts and memories. Funeral service was Wednesday, March 12, at Ellis Funeral Home, with burial in Lindenwood Cemetery.
