Estella Pearl Boggess

Estella Pearl Boggess passed peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Parkview Regional Medical Center at the age of 98. She was one of six children born to Joseph R. Collins Sr. and Mattie Lou (Phinzey) Collins She spent most of her life in Fort Wayne and was a graduate of Central High School. Surviving are a daughter, Juanita (Emanuel) Wasson; son, Richard (Janice) Ridley II; five grandchildren, Anthony (Becky) Ridley, Richard (Condra) Ridley III, Teresa (Lyle) Yarbrough, Nikols Ridley and Randall Ridley; 35 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Joseph R. Collins Jr., and sisters, Gladys Pyles, Pauline Collins, Gussie Ganaway and Olivia Johnson. Service was Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Gomez Temple AME Church, 2551 S. Anthony, with burial in Highland Park Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ellis Funeral Home.

Milton Cowans

Milton Cowans was born May 28, 1929 in Tyler, Ala.  He was the son of the late James and Ethel Cowans.  He departed this life at the age of 84 on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 with his wife by his side. Milton confessed Christ at an early age at the Town Creek Baptist Church in Cyler, Ala.  He retired from General Motors with 40 years of service.  He loved to build and make different items such as, stereo cases, mirrors for the wall and many other items. He leaves to cherish his memory, Debra Cowans of Fort Wayne; loving sister, Ovetta Williams of Salem, Ala., and a host of nieces nephews, cousins and friends. Mitlon was also preceded in death by his sisters, Sadie, Mary and Wilhelmina and  a brother, Edward Cowans Sr. Service was Friday, March 7, 2014, at Ellis Funeral Home, 1021 E. Lewis St., with burial in Covington Memorial Gardens. arrangements were by Ellis Funeral Home.

Joseph “Wally Coco” Jones Jr

Joseph “Wally Coco” Jones Jr., 57, of Fort Wayne, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014. Surviving are his mother, Allie Glass; sons, Aljamink English and Christopher Jones; daughter, Allie Hart; brothers, Terrence (Shenell) Glass and Kevin (Stacy) Jones; sisters, Kimberly (Delonzo) Myles, Paulette (Danny) Nellems, Rochelle (Rommel) Dickey, Sherida (Daniel) Edwards, and Jacquelyn Jones; grandchildren; He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Jones Sr.; brother, Steven D. Jones; and stepfather, Leroy Glass. Funeral service was Tuesday, March 4 at New Zion Tabernacle Church, with burial in Concordia Cemetery Gardens. Arrangements were by Carmichael Funeral Service.

Donna Elaine Lawrence was born Jan. 30, 1970 in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Mary D.  Lawrence-Sales and Joseph Hines.  She departed this earthly life on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014 at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne. She graduated from Central High School in Cape Giradeau, Mo., in 1988.  She worked as a hospital receptionist for several years at both St. Joseph and Parkview hospitals. Donna was a very giving and free-hearted person.  She would do anything for anybody.  She dearly loved her daughter, Brittany, grandchildren and family. Donna leaves to cherish a  daughter, Brittany Lawrence; her mother and stepfather, Mary D. (Montro) Sales; her father, Joseph Hines; brothers, Tracy L. Lawrence, Joseph Hine Jr. and  Michael Hines; sisters, Margaretta Sales, Vernida “Marie” (Marc) Robinson and Betty Hines; a step-sister, Regina Johnson; a grandson, Trevion McClain; granddaughters, Lyric Lawrence and Jez’Zarae Lawrence  and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, two uncles and two aunts. Service was Monday, March 3, 2014, at Kingdom Door Worship Center. Arrangements were by Ellis Funeral Home.

Jaiden Tyshawn McBride, 13, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2014, surrounded by his family and friends. Surviving are his parents, Amanda McBride and Dawann Martin; and siblings Javon, Jayvion and Jabreea McBride, all of Fort Wayne. Winston Churchill Meriwether, 72, of Fort Wayne, departed this life on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. He was born on April 6, 1941, in Clarksville, Tenn. Surviving are his wife, Emily Meriwether; sons, Roger (Jennifer) Meriwether of Fort Wayne and Roderick (Anabel) Meriwether of Nashville, Tenn; daughter, Dea (Mark) Banks of Fort Wayne; sister, Juanita Walker of Indianapolis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service was Friday, March 7 at Carmichael Funeral Service, with burial in Lindenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were by Carmichael Funeral Service.

Terrion “TJ” Moore

Terrion “TJ” Moore

Terrion “TJ” Moore, of Indianapolis, formerly of Buffalo, Minn., Noblesville, Ind., and Fort Wayne, went home to his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. Born Nov. 3, 1994, in Gary, Ind., he was the first of three children and the only son of Anita Holmes and Otis Moore. He was a friend to many and will forever be remembered for his smiling face and warm embrace. TJ was very active in sports. He ran track, played football and wrestled throughout his high school years. He graduated from Arlington High School in Indianapolis in May 2013. It was a proud day on Aug. 24, 2013, when TJ announced to his family that he had enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was proud of his accomplishments and looked forward to his future. Any one of his friends would tell you that he was very protective of those he loved and that he truly had a heart of gold. He loved kids and had an amazing sense of humor. His smile alone would melt your heart. On Feb. 11, 2014, TJ left for Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. It was not long afterwards that God called him home. TJ leaves to cherish his memory his beloved mother, Anita Holmes; father, Otis Moore; sisters, Tia and Toya Moore; grandmother, Diana “YaYa” Walls; great-grandmother, Essie “Ma’am” Holmes; aunt, Chrystal “Titi” Porter; special cousins, Courtney Porter and Alesha Tindal; god sister, Aaliyah Crouch; special friends, Malika and Crystal Cavalier; two great aunts, Ruthie “Muma” Redmon and Valerie “Aunti Val” Brown; and two great uncles, Dwight and Lewis Jones. He also leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, family, and friends. “We thank God for blessing us and allowing TJ to be with us for 19 years. We love him so much, but God loves him more.” Funeral service was Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at New Mt. Olive M.B. Church, 427 W. 23rd Ave., Gary, with Pastor Charles A. Floyd II officiating and interment in Evergreen Memorial Park, Hobart, Ind. Arrangements were by Guy & Allen Funeral Home.

Thelma Novella Smith

Thelma  Novella Smith was born to Charles Marshall Smith and Josephine Biggs Milan on Oct. 28, 1933 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  On Monday, Feb. 24, 2014 at the age 80 she passed away peacefully at Grey Stone Health and Rehabilitation Center. Thelma retired after 30 years of service from Creative Dining, and was a longtime member of St. John C.M.E. Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; children, Gilda Louise and Stephen Anthony Smith; brothers, Charles Calhoun Smith, David Stanley Smith and sisters, Alice Estelle, and Lillian Elizabeth Rafe. To always cherish memories are her children, D’Nell, Burton (Bernita), Charles, Norman (Jocelyn), and William (Alisha) Smith; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Service was Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Turner Chapel AME Church, 836 E. Jefferson Blvd., with burial in Lindenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ellis Funeral Home, 1021 E Lewis St.

Ethel L. Billingsley

Ethel L. Billingsley was born June 30, 1933 in Brent, Ala. to the union of Lydia L. and Calvin Billingsley, in addition to six other children. She attended Mount Ebell Church where she accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age.  Ethel attended Bibb County Training School where she was an avid leader in basketball.  After graduation she followed her sister Lula to Fort Wayne, Indiana and found employment at the State Developmental Center.  She later met and married James C. White and gained employment at Parkview Hospital.  Ethel was faithful in her employment and retired in 1995 with 35 years of service. Ethel enjoyed fishing.  She became a member of Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. P.H. Love. Through the years, she united with another church  but renewed her membership again with Friendship under the pastorate  of the Rev. Guy Willis. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents Calvin and Lydia; a son, Darnell; sisters, Josephine Thomas, Lula V. Adams-Lawrene; a sister-in-law Joyce Dixie and other relatives. She leaves to cherish her precious memories, one son, Gregory D. White; two daughter, Ollie Melissa (Luther) Green and Marilyn D. (Ludie) Wimbley; a very special daughter, Thelma Preston; four adopted daughters, Pallas Fulmore, Cecelia Lewis and Shirley Dunbar all of Fort Wayne, and Christian Barron of New Port News, Virginia;  sisters-in-law, Kay Simmons, Diane Gibons and Vicki Gunn; seven grandchildren, Braxton White, James “JP” (Nicolle) Wimbley, Jeremy (Ashlee) Wimbley, Breanne (Demarcus) Benson, Tiffany Leach, Danielle Martin and Travis (Jamie) Martin; siblings, Dorothy Pearson of Fort Wayne, Jessie King of Brent and Retha Colvin of Chicago; a first cousin, Jessie (Hattie) Harris of Cleveland 11 great-grandchildren and  four godchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Ovenya Perry for being a loving and dedicated caregiver.
