Patricia Elizabeth Henderson Leanear Day, passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, in Nashville, Tenn. A native of Middletown, Ohio, she worked at Wright- Patterson Air Force Base and the city of Middletown. While living in Fort Wayne, she retired from Lincoln Financial Group. She was a very active member in Union Baptist Church and Second Baptist in Middletown. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star-Lily of the Valley Chapter 55, a board member of the Metropolitan Football League, an active participant in Church Women United, East Wayne Street Head Start, her Neighborhood Association and an usher at the Grand Wayne Center. She loved to bowl. Surviving are her daughter, Natalie A. Bowen; son, Mark (Vanessa) E. Lenear; grandchildren, Bernard J. Gaines, Kamilyn P. VanNoy, Katrina J. Gaines, Aaron (Zaya) M. Bowen and Wesley M. Lenear; great-grandchildren, Shemeka Bratton, Devon Carroll, Tyron Blash, BreAnna Gaines, Dominique VanNoy, DeAngelo VanNoy, Tatyanna Gaines, Kiera Gaines, Quinn Puckett, Takiyah Gaines and Zane Bowen; sister-in-law, Gay E. Henderson; nephew, J. Michael (Valerie) Henderson; nieces, Lisa (Archie) Woods, Kathleen Henderson and Janine (John) Rogers; mother-in-law, Mishie L. Day; brother-in-law, Clifford Day; and many great nieces, nephews and cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Elwood Henderson; husband, Willie Lee Day; mother, Elizabeth Henderson Younger; daughter, Deborah E. Turner; brother, James E. Henderson; and aunt, Rossella Harper. Richard Godfrey Gatewood, 74, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014. He was born Sept. 4, 1939, in Springfield, Tenn. He retired from Jefferson Smurfit Corp. in 1998. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Pearline Gatewood; children, Chriscelle Williams, DeWayne Gatewood, Michelle (Leonard) Wilson, and Loveless O. Gatewood; brothers, Robert (Gloria) Gatewood, Melvin Gatewood and Jerry Gatewood; sisters, Grace (Shreddrick) Mitchell and Frankie (Andrew) Stovall; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral service was Saturday, Feb. 15 at Southern Heights Baptist Church, with burial in Lindenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were by Carmichael Funeral Service.

 

Geraldine Gunn, 59, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 at St. Joseph Hospital. Born in Byhalia, Miss., she was the daughter of William T. and Etta (Conrad) Gunn. She was a nutrition supervisor for Martin Luther King Montessori School and a foster parent. She is survived by her life-long companion, Ray Morgan; son, Carvin Gunn; daughters, NaTasha and LaTonna Gunn all of Fort Wayne; sisters, Joyce Eldridge, Louria Adkins both of Fort Wayne, Mary Willoughby of Indianapolis, Gloria Martin of Cleveland, Ohio, and Judy Gunn of Memphis, Tenn.; and brother, Ivory Conrad of Fort Wayne; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; and best friend, Patricia Taylor. Funeral service was Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 at Come As You Are Community Church, where she was a member with burial in Lindenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were by Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Homes.

 

Willie R. Manning, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 at Covington Manor. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and retired from Fruehauf Trailers after 40 years of service. Surviving are his 11 children; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Service is noon Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 at Ellis Funeral Home with calling one hour prior to service. Interment in Covington Memorial Gardens.

 

Ethelyn Janet Taylor-Cary, 73, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Parkview Regional Medical Center. Born in Fort Wayne, she was employed by Safford Stamp Company, Chicago and received an A.S. degree in Computer Science from IVY Tech State College. She leaves behind her son, Fredrick Taylor; sisters, Cora Lee Rowe and Tonya Odom-Holly; brother, Cean Odom; favorite aunt, Ann Jel Brown; and six grandchildren. LaTascia Annette Wright, 43 of Fort Wayne, died on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Lutheran Hospital. She was a graduate of South Side High School, worked as an independent contractor for 9 1/2 years with a In Home Agency and 12 years at Fort Wayne State Developmental Center; and a member of Gomez Temple AME Church for over 20 years. LaTascia, known to say “Knucklehead,” loved to dance, landscape, make candles, bake and spend time with family and was always putting others before herself. Surviving are her daughters, DaVonna Wright and Dyriah Sanders; stepson, Darius Hopkins; mother, Lillie Brown; father, James Russell Sr.; sisters, Quantana Watson, LaVonne and Shaquenette Russell, and Monita Patterson; brothers, James Russell Jr., DeWayne Watson and Larry (Diane) Watson; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Theodis and Annie Brown, Allen M. and Ethel Russell; uncles, Sam and Jimmy Brown; and an aunt, Shirley Hunt. Service is Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Turner Chapel AME Church, with burial in Concordia Cemetery Gardens. Arrangements were by Ellis Funeral Home.
