James Allison Sr., 88, of Fort Wayne, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Heritage Park’s Senior Care Community. He was better known as Jim. Born in Browns, Ala., he was a son of Jordan and Frances Allison and lived most of his life in Fort Wayne. A veteran of World War II, Jim served in the U.S. 10th Army’s Quartermaster Corps during the Battle of Okinawa. The over 265,000 who perished left him grateful that he survived. He was also among the first international peacekeeping forces in Korea when Japan surrendered the territory. After he was honorably discharged in March 1947, Jim joined his parents and two sisters as they settled in Fort Wayne. A man of many passions, Jim loved to cook, dance and dress. Watching his mother cook landed him Head Chef at the Stage Door Lounge. He retired from Flashfold Carton, Inc. in 1973. Patrons at an American Legion Post, he frequented, emulated the dapper dresser by shrugging their shoulders in a dance they named after him. Family was Jim’s greatest passion. As ‘Big Dad’, he was the patriarch of four generations. Jim was extremely proud of his 12 children, Jeanette (Lucius) Bearfield, Joan (Oscar) Turner, Cheryle (Gary Surles) Underwood, Vernon, Ruby and Roland Allison, all of Fort Wayne, Veronica (William) Montgomery and Mary (Warren) Thomas, both of Indianapolis, James Allison Jr. of Middletown, R.I., Vadie (Darrell) Strozier of Detroit, Darrell and Robert Allison, both of San Diego. He is also survived by two sisters, Vadie Frane and Katie Daniels, both of Fort Wayne; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons; as well as his many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his loving wife, Ruby M. Allison, the mother of all his children. Service is 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1331 Gay St., with burial in Covington Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road. Memorial donations may be made in Jim’s name to the American Cancer Society . To sign the online guestbook, please visit www.domccombandsons.com
