We don’t know all the details here but suffice it to say, for the most part, our laws do not adequately protect women from stalkers and violent, manipulative men. That said, parents, your children might hate you for a moment, but if you see your daughter (or son for that matter) in a relationship with a manipulator, do what you can to get them away from the situation before it’s too late. There are vast amounts of online sources or even your local victims assistance office that can help you learn and recognize signs that your child is in a dangerous relationship. Understand that your child is not going to be happy with your interference but it could save her or his life. It’s not a failsafe. Abused spouses and partners have a tendency to go back to abusers for a variety of reasons and there’s often not much you can do about that. Again, we’re not saying it’s a cure all. Something tells us that the parents of Ms. Leedy saw this man for who and what he is a did everything they could to keep their daughter safe. The fact that the perpetrator taunted the father the way he did after murderer the man’s daughter tells us that Ms. Leedy’s dad recognized her boyfriend for the monster he is and let it be known he knew. Unfortunately, it did not prevent this tragedy, but we do believe the family did what they could—especially given the weak laws we have protecting people from these situation. All we ask is that you remain vigilant and teach your children early about abusers and abusive relationships.
