Former NYPD cop charged with hate crime after video surfaces

Black folks for years have been shouted down when they’ve complained that police departments have harbored virulent and active racists. We wonder how many of Mr. Setiawan’s colleagues knew of his sentiments when he was serving on the department. Furthermore, we wonder how many of them had concerns and, of those, we wonder how many saw fit to report the potential problem to superiors. Yes, racism among those who would enforce the law is a problem, in case you hadn’t noticed.

Ex-NYPD cop charged with hate crime over anti-Jewish graffiti in Brooklyn

Authorities charged Michael Setiawan with criminal mischief as a hate crime and aggravated harassment, accusing him of scrawling more than 20 crude messages such as ‘F–k you Jews’ and ‘Jews ain’t s–t’ throughout Borough Park, home to a large Orthodox Jewish community. Setiawan had previously worked for in the 69th Precinct before leaving the NYPD in 2007.

Spray-painted, anti-Semitic messages found in one of Brooklyn’s largest Orthodox communities may have been the hateful work of a former city cop, police said Sunday.

Authorities charged ex-officer Michael Setiawan, 36, with two counts of criminal mischief as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

Setiawan was last assigned to the 69th Precinct, which covers Canarsie, before leaving the department in 2007, police said.
