Man detained after fatal stabbing

FORT WAYNE—At approximately 8:19 a.m., May 1, officers with the Fort Wayne Police
Department responded to a report of a fight with a possible stabbing near the intersection of Wayne Trace and Drexel Avenue. Officers arrived and located an adult male in critical condition. Medics took the victim, later identified as Raynell C. White, 30, to a local hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
The preliminary investigation so far has revealed a fight took place between two adult males on the lot of the nearby gas station. The victim suffered some type of injury, but it was not apparent if this injury was a stab wound, a gunshot wound or another type of wound, but later was confirmed to be a stab wound. Witnesses reported seeing a pickup truck flee the area, possibly containing a person involved in the altercation. The pickup truck was located a short time later by a trooper with the Indiana State Police, and the occupant of the truck, an adult male, was detained by police.

This person is considered a person of interest at this time and is currently being interviewed by detectives, but no charges have been filed as of yet.
The nature of the fight and what led up to it is still being investigated. It is unknown if the males were customers of the gas station, or if they were merely passing through.
Detectives are working to establish what led up to the altercation and any motives. At these early stages, gang activity is not suspected.
Other witnesses were interviewed by detectives, and crime scene units processed the scene for any evidence. If there is video surveillance from any nearby businesses, that footage will be reviewed.

This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police
