Motorcyclist critically injured in downtown accident

FORT WAYNE—At approximately 3:05 p.m., July 28, Fort Wayne police responded to the intersection of Van Buren and Jefferson on the report of a passenger car and motorcycle accident.

On arrival, officers observed a male adult down on the northeast corner of the intersection unconscious. The male, operator of the motorcycle, was transported from the scene to a local hospital where he was determined to be in critical condition.

Preliminarily investigator have determined that the motorcyclist was northbound on Van Buren approaching Jefferson when the passenger car traveling southbound on Van Buren attempted a left-hand turn to travel east on Jefferson turned into the path of the motorcycle and both collided in the intersection. The passenger car was occupied by three individuals, female adult driver, adult male passenger and an infant. No one in the passenger car was injured.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Coroner’s office and the Allen County Prosecutors office.

Man killed in motorcycle after performing wheelie at high rate of speed

FORT WAYNE—At approximately 12:40 p.m., July 29, Fort Wayne police responded to the reported motorcycle and pickup truck accident in the 3300 block of E. State Street.

On arrival police, fire and medics found a male down in the eastbound lanes of State Street just west of Bolton Street. The man, later identified as 21 year old Christopher Burcham, was declared dead at the scene by medics.

In the driveway of a fast food restaurant just south of the scene a pickup truck was found engulfed in flames. Fort Wayne fire officials quickly extinguished the blaze.

Fort Wayne police crash investigators have determined based on eyewitness accounts that Burcham was the operator of the motorcycle that was observed traveling east on State street at a very high rate of speed. He was observed pulling his front tire off of the roadway performing a wheelie as he continued east at a very high rate of speed. The pickup truck was facing west in the center turn lane of E. State Street. The driver of the pickup truck turned left crossing over the eastbound lanes of State Street when both the motorcycle and the pickup truck collided. The collision resulted in a fire which eventually engulfed the pickup truck. There were two individuals in the truck, both of whom were able to escape the truck unharmed.

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Coroner’s office and the Allen County Prosecutors office.

 

Man killed in crash while fleeing police

FORT WAYNE—At approximately 6:45 p.m., July 30, Fort Wayne police responded to the area of Southgate Shopping Plaza looking for a wanted suspect who had several active warrants for his arrest locally.

Officers set up surveillance in the area and at approximately 6:48 p.m. the suspect was spotted parking in the retail centers lot. Officers approached the suspect who immediate drove off with a passenger in his vehicle. As the suspect began to flee, he stopped his vehicle and allowed the passenger to exit then led officers on a pursuit that eventually led to the suspect driving south on the Airport Expressway from Fairfield Avenue.

During the pursuit, officers deployed a tire deflation device in the intersection of Airport Expressway and Bluffton Road, which the suspect’s vehicle hit resulting, in two of his tires deflating.

The suspect continued driving south on Airport Expressway and as he neared Ardmore Avenue he veered left of center driving into the northbound lanes of the expressway. A northbound construction vehicle observed the oncoming suspect vehicle and attempted to drive to the right of the roadway. The suspect, however, drove in the direction of the construction vehicle, sideswiping the cab of the truck and then crashed into the left rear wheels of the construction vehicle, smashing the driver’s side of the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect was pinned in his vehicle as a result of the impact and required extrication by Fort Wayne fire personnel. The suspect was transported from the scene in critical condition but later died while being treated at a local hospital. The driver of the construction vehicle was not injured in the crash.

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Coroner’s office and the Allen County Prosecutors office.
