Black firefighters win $98M settlement from NYC

Apparently, we do not live in an idyllic post-racial society—at least, that’s the verdict from the courts. As an additional footnote, the article quoted here also refers to gender discrimination suits the municipality recently lost. One has to wonder about the continuing complaints that African American and other “minority” applicants have with regard to trying to join public safety organizations (such as turning in top academic scores and being washed on in the “personal interview”) and the treatment the successful few endure.

Black NY firefighters announce $98M settlement

NEW YORK (AP) — A black firefighters’ group that had sued New York City, alleging discrimination, says minority fire department applicants will be eligible to receive back pay totaling $98 million.

The settlement was announced Tuesday by lawyers for the group, the Vulcan Society. They say the figure includes more than $6 million to cover lost medical payments.
