Two injured in front yard shooting

FORT WAYNE—At approximately 4:54 p.m., July 2, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 4400 block of Smith Street in reference to a shooting. Officers arrived on scene and located two victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Paramedics arrived on scene and transported the victims to a local hospital.

The female juvenile, 15-year-old Lashire M. Collins, was transported to the hospital in serious condition and the male adult victim, 19-year-old James E. Starks III, was transported to the hospital in serious condition. Starks was downgraded to critical condition by a physician at the hospital. Collins remains in stable condition.

Initial reports indicate the victims were standing in the front yard of a residence at the intersection of Smith Street and Senate Avenue when the shooting occurred. Witnesses reported the suspect fired several gunshots while standing on Senate Avenue west of the intersection. The suspect was described as a male black and was last seen running southbound in the alley west of Smith Street.

Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and Crime Scene Technicians are processing the scene for evidence. No arrests have been made and there are no suspects at this time.

This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Assisting agencies included the City of Fort Wayne Fire Department and Three Rivers Ambulance Authority.
