FORT WAYNE—Contemporary gospel group Spirit & Truth is scheduled to debut their first CD—“It’s A Beautiful Day”—at a special celebration, 5 p.m., Oct. 5 at Friendship Baptist Church, 451 E. Douglas Ave.
Established in November 2012, Spirit & Truth say they find joy in praising the Lord and spreading the Gospel of Christ through their unique blend of jazz, blues, pop and soul flavored Christian music.
“Our goal is to make music that can appeal to everyone in order to lead non-believers into the Body of Christ,” explained members in a press release. That idea comes to the forefront in their live performances and on their debut CD, with uplifting messages being the focus, whether they are playing a jazzy piece such as their song “Heaven” or an up-tempo number like their title track, “It’s a Beautiful Day.”
Spirit & Truth have performed at private parties, churches and picnics. In August, they were at Link’s for a charity event sponsored by the A. Philip Randolph Institute‘s scholarship committee. Their most recent performance was at the Amnesty and Deliverance Festival, hosted by Joe Ayers, where they sang their title track and other songs from their debut CD, “It’s a Beautiful Day.” The audience gave a positive response. The group has been working all year to produce their CD and they keep busy with stringent rehearsals and recording sessions.
They explained that part of the success of the group is their mutual respect of the Lord and of one another. All members understand that everyone plays an important role in the success of a song and glorifying the Lord is the ultimate goal. With their musically diverse backgrounds and tastes adding to the creative mix, each song emerges unique—but definitely delivering Spirit & Truth.
The group includes: LaShonda Davis (co-founder/manager, keyboards, lead/background vocals, songwriter and engineer); Dre G. (co-founder/co-manager, drums, lead/background vocals, songwriter, “muscle”); Tony “Bass” Griggs (bass guitar, “muscle”) and Toinette “Toi” Jones (secretary, lead/background vocals).
Spirit & Truth recently added new members, Corey Freeman (background vocals, “hype man” and Debra Bournes (vocals).
The group also included studio musicans “T” on lead guitar and Isaiah Craig and Milas Gaston on keyboards.
