Two separate drowning incidents investigated

FORT WAYNE—On April 30, the Fort Wayne Police Department, in cooperation with the Fort Wayne Fire Department and the Department of Natural Resources began to search the area of the St. Joseph River along 6401 St. Joe Road in the Shoaff Park area in connection with a missing person investigation. That same morning, the remains of an adult male were recovered by the Department of Natural Resources downstream from this area. Subsequent reports indicate that the body was that of 58-year-old Jeffery Bultemeier, whom relatives earlier in the week had reported as missing. The Allen County Coroner later confirmed that Bultemeier had drown but at this time, foul play is not suspected.

This incident remains under investigation with the Department of Natural Resources, the Allen County Coroner, and the City of Fort Wayne Police Department.

A day earlier, Fort Wayne Fire Department divers had rescued 52-year-old Thomas R. Haskins after finding him in the St. Mary’s River near the Main Street Bridge. Reportedly, medical personnel found Haskins after being submerged in the river for nearly 20 minutes and were able to revive him and transport him to a local hospital where he later died.

The Allen County Coroner has ruled Haskins’ drowning an accident.
