Arrest made in Lillie Street homicide

FORT WAYNE—At approximately 2:23 a.m., Sept. 11, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 3100 block of Lillie Street in reference to a shooting. Officers arrived on scene and located a male victim in the north/south alley between Lillie Street and Winter Street. Officers advised it appeared the victim, later identified as 22-year-old Joseph D. Conwell, was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Paramedics arrived and transported Conwell to a local hospital in critical condition. Upon arriving at the hospital, Conwell was pronounced deceased by a physician.

Detectives interviewed potential witnesses and investigated where the shooting occurred. Crime Scene Technicians processed the area for evidence. Investigators later arrested 38-year-old William E. Martin on a preliminary charge of Aggravated Battery in the homicide.

This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

Assisting agencies include the City of Fort Wayne Fire Department and the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority.
